In 1825, America was still a new nation, just forming its own unique identity and traditions. Thomas Cole invented a new style of art, one that Americans could call their own. His landscape paintings launched the art movement known as the Hudson River School. His groundbreaking achievements took place here in Catskill, New York -- in the "peaceful shades" of his beloved home, Cedar Grove.
In the late 1960's, Thomas Carvel had a dream of building a championship golf course that he, his friends, the local community and people from nearby cities could enjoy with easy access. By 1968 the dream became a reality and the Thomas Carvel Country Club opened. Carvel Country Club, with its 18 hole championship course, is located in northern Dutchess County. Carvel's challenging layout will test even the most discriminating players and it will encourage less experienced players to play their best round. After the success of years past, Carvel Country Club has decided to open its doors for a limited 2010 golf season. Don't forget to mark your calendars; we look forward to seeing you in 2010.

Politics before the Civil War was a whirlwind of opposing interest groups. Martin Van Buren was able to unite those groups becoming president in 1837, but he was unable to gain a second term. As frustration and violence over the extension of slavery grew in the 1840's, Van Buren ran for the presidency twice more from this house. He hoped for re-election but failed, ultimately, just as the union.

The golf course was designed by USGA architect Nicholas Psiahas. The original 9 holes were opened in 1990. A second 9 holes were added in 1999. It is by far one of the most outstanding 18 hole, par 72 championship courses in the Northeast. It offers not only breathtaking scenery, but a tremendous challenge as well. There are water hazards, bunkers, doglegs and two-tier greens. Strategical shot placement will aid you on some of the narrow, tree-lined fairways. The breath taking views and serene atmosphere make this golf course very special.
