The first dam was built here in 1888 to create a reservoir, part of the San Francisco watershed, that fills a portion of the rift valley of the San Andreas Fault.
The course came later, in 1924, the design of William Herbert Fowler, a noted British golf architect who pioneered in designing courses that naturally followed the lay of the land as does Crystal Springs. Besides working on many famous courses in the British Isles, Fowler did golf designs on the East and West coasts of the United States.

Harding Park's layout follows the original routing as designed by architect Willie Watson in 1925. The course takes advantage of the property's existing topography, contours and vegetation. The predominant features include the towering Monterey Cypress trees and the nearby presence of Lake Merced. Harding's strategy and character have been substantially enhanced with the inclusion of several carefully placed bunkers and re-contoured green complexes.

John Muir was many things, inventor, immigrant, botanist, glaciologist, writer, co-founder of the Sierra Club, fruit rancher. But it was John Muir's love of nature, and the preservation of it, that we can thank him for today. Muir convinced President Teddy Roosevelt to protect Yosemite (including Yosemite Valley), Sequoia, Grand Canyon and Mt. Rainier as National Parks.

"Everyone mount up!" This became a familiar call from Spanish Captain Juan Bautista de Anza. In 1776, as Americans fought for their independence in the East, Anza led almost 300 people over 1200 miles to settle Alta California. It was the first overland route established to connect New Spain with San Francisco. Walk in their footsteps from Nogales, Arizona to San Francisco, California.

Holes 15 through 18 have magnificent views. From 15 you get a breathtaking look at downtown Oakland, the Bay Bridge and San Francisco. Flip side is that it is the ultimate sucker hole. Only 259 from the blues and 245 from the whites, everyone pulls out the driver at least once to take a shot. No problem. Just don't pull it, or you end up somewhere on the 16th fairway, and very O.B. Oh, and don't slice, or you might as well be in the bay. A great risk-reward hole.
