Although the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest can be reached by plane or boat, traveling by ferry will make you rethink your concept of mass transit. Although the ferrys, part of the Washington State Department of Transportation are used mostly by commuters, these same ferrys can be a leisurely way to take in the stunning beauty of this popular tourist spot - an archipelago of more than 450 tiny islands roughly halfway between Seattle and Vancouver. In particular, the route of the Illahee, the 45 minute ride between San Juan Island and Orcas Island, has been described by a writer for the Travel section as "the most beautiful trip in the entire Washington State ferry system."
